The cervix is part of the female reproductive system. It has a role to play during menstruation, conception and even delivery. It also protects the uterus from bacteria and other foreign objects. The importance of the cervix cannot be overstated. For something that plays such a powerful role, it is important that you keep the cervix healthy at all times.
Cervical cancer, which occurs in the cells in the cervix, is the fourth most common type of cancer that affects women. The most common cause of cervix cancer is Human papillomavirus (HPV). When you properly take care of your cervix, you can reduce the risk of cervical cancer and other issues that could affect the cervix.Â
As we head into January, which is Cervical Health Awareness Month, we would be looking at ways to keep the cervix healthy.Â
Go For Check Up RegularlyÂ
You should endeavor to go for a pelvic checkup regularly. During a pelvic checkup, the doctor would examine the reproductive organ, including the cervix. With a Pap smear test, the doctor can check for signs of cancer in the cervical walls and signs of other problems. Going for a pelvic exam regularly would reduce the risks of coming down with cervical cancer or any other disease as it would be nipped in the bud, before it even becomes a problem.Â
How often you go for a pelvic checkup depends on your body, which is something you should discuss with your doctor.Â
Get Vaccinated Against HPV
Human papillomavirus or HPV is the leading cause of cervical cancer in women. Getting vaccinated against HPV can help prevent infections from some dangerous strains of HPV, some of which could cause cervical cancer. Women who are between the ages of 11-26 are advised to receive the HPV vaccine, although women who are older can receive it based on doctor’s advice.Â
Also, you should get tested for HPV regularly, especially if you have an active sex life.Â
Practice Safe Sex
When abstinence is not possible, make sure you are practicing safe sex by making use of condoms. Condoms not only reduce the risk of pregnancy but also reduces the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases, like HPV. As a woman, there are condoms designed for you that you can use during sex, if your partner is hesitant about wearing one. Remember, your health is more important than anything.Â
Eat The Right Stuff
What you fill your plate with can affect your cervix health, which is why you have to pay attention to what you eat. Eat foods that are packed with nutrients, especially those rich in vitamins and antioxidants. Eat more greens and foods that are fresh. Cut back on junks and other unhealthy foods.Â
By taking the right steps, you can keep your cervix healthy and reduce the risk of cervical cancer. You should begin to see your cervix as an important part of you. If you notice any problems or if you have more questions, do not hesitate to speak with a doctor, preferably a gynecologist.Â
